When tough problems meet innovative solutions, great companies are born. That’s the story behind Bal Seal Engineering, Inc., a leading supplier of sealing, connecting, conducting and EMI/RFI shielding solutions to original equipment manufacturers worldwide.
Our core product was first conceived in 1951 by Peter J. Balsells, a young engineer and entrepreneur from Catalonia, Spain. Faced with a critical aerospace sealing challenge, Balsells applied education and inspiration to devise a new technology that combined the unique mechanical properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) with a precision-engineered spring. Balsells’ invention, which outperformed conventional elastomeric O-rings and satisfied the toughest application requirements, became known as the Bal Seal® spring-energized seal. His energizer component, the Bal Spring® canted coil spring, proved effective in connecting and EMI/RFI shielding/grounding applications. When incorporated into housings made from various types of metals, the spring's unique electrical and mechanical properties led to the development of Bal Contact™ contacts and contact systems.
From our humble beginnings in 1958, we grew to occupy a small manufacturing facility in the Southern California city of Santa Ana. In 1971, we exported our first export products to Europe. And in 1994, we established a European subsidiary in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
In 1998, we moved to our current world headquarters, a 150,000-sq-ft facility in Foothill Ranch, California USA. Manufacturing began at a second U.S. location in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2007. We signaled our expansion into Asian markets in 2008 with the opening of a Hong Kong sales office, and extended our European presence with sales locations in the Czech Republic in 2011, Germany in 2013 and the UK in 2014. We opened a new 155,000 sq ft facility in Colorado Springs in 2014.
Today, we are a growing, thriving organization of more than 500 employees, with dedicated manufacturing cells that serve medical, automotive, aerospace and many other industries.
Although Balsells’ original innovations are still an important part of its product mix, we are consistently developing new solutions and materials that play an important role in the advancement of technology and the growth of global business.
