Governor Hickenlooper, Mayor Bach Help Celebrate Bal Seal Grand Opening

Tours, speeches highlight building’s ability to provide flexibility, transparency and equality

Colorado Springs, Colo. – U.S.A. – February 18, 2014 – Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach topped the speakers list for the grand opening celebration of Bal Seal Engineering Inc.’s new manufacturing facility at 1350 Belpratt View in Colorado Springs. The event, held on February 18, also featured speeches from Bal Seal management, including President and CEO Rick Dawson.

Addressing a 300-plus crowd, Governor Hickenlooper and Mayor Bach congratulated Bal Seal on the completion of its 155,000+ sq. ft state-of-the-art facility. Tours featured the unveiling of a permanent display that tells the story of Bal Seal from its founding in 1958 to the present, and showcases the breadth of applications in which Bal Seal products are found.

The arrival of Bal Seal, a diverse technology manufacturer with worldwide locations, signals 200–250 new job opportunities for the Colorado Springs community, as well as continued involvement with local academic institutions. The construction project, which was designed on a philosophy of equality, transparency, and flexibility, is the result of collaboration between CSNA, a local architectural firm, and local contactor Bryan Construction.

“We’re investing in our future and in the future of Colorado Springs,” said CEO Richard Dawson. “This facility enables us to increase capacity to meet the anticipated demand for our products, but it also enables us to support the Colorado Springs community and to continue our partnerships with Colorado educational institutions.”

In creating an environment that fosters social interaction and interpersonal relationships, the new complex features a picnic area, a playground, a fitness trail and a park. Finishes and amenities such as Air Pear thermal equalizers and Solatube tubular daylighting devices provide purified air and natural sunlight throughout the building.

Bal Seal, a privately held company with headquarters in Foothill Ranch, Calif. and offices in Europe and Asia, announced in late 2011 that it had chosen Colorado Springs as a location for the facility. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony of the new facility in June 2012. The manufacturer of Bal Seal Canted Coil Springs® and Bal Seal® Spring-energized Seals currently leases a smaller building in the city, where it employs 81 people. A projected rise in sales and significant increase in demand for its products drove its decision to expand.

AIA Cites Bal Seal’s CO Building Plans for Design Excellence

Company’s energy-saving, family-friendly facility gets judges’ nod

Colorado Springs, Colo. – August 30, 2012 – Less than two months after a groundbreaking ceremony held to mark the beginning of its construction, and an estimated 30-60 days before any real building will begin, a new facility planned by Bal Seal Engineering and Colorado architects CSNA has received a citation for design excellence from the American Institute of Architects Colorado South Chapter (AIA Colorado South).

In a news release earlier this week, AIA Colorado South named the project – which will put a new 155,000 square-foot manufacturing facility at 1350 Belpratt View in Colorado Springs – as its Citation Award winner in the “un-built architecture” category.  A certificate commemorating the award was presented to representatives from CSNA and Bal Seal on August 24th.

According to Alaina Gonzales, Membership and Communication Manager for AIA Colorado, Bal Seal’s design was selected from 12 entries, and was one of only five given out this year in all categories. “The unbuilt category isn’t frequently awarded – no awards were given in this category in 2011,” Gonzales says. “This project caught the attention of the judges.”

Gregory Friesen, principal architect for the Bal Seal facility project, says he believes the award is the “best possible outcome,” because it considers design apart from construction, in the same way that a musical score might be considered separate from its performance.

“The German philosopher Goethe described architecture as ‘frozen music,’” Friesen explains. “It’s a great analogy, and I think it illustrates perfectly why a citation is the ideal category for an un-built work. It acknowledges that, due to many factors, the final construction may not always convey the original design ideal.”

Jon Stillman, who has managed the construction project under Pauling Properties, Inc. since planning first began in 2011, says he is committed to sticking with CSNA’s award-winning plans. He adds that the new facility will incorporate state-of-the art energy-saving features, as well as indoor and outdoor common areas that foster a “family-friendly environment.”

Bal Seal, a worldwide leader in the production of custom-engineered sealing, connecting, conducting and EMI shielding components for critical defense, automotive and medical equipment, announced its plans to build what it calls an “expansion facility” at the Colorado Springs location in December of 2011. The company held an official groundbreaking ceremony on June 14th 2012, and workers with large earth-moving machines began preparing the 18-acre plot for construction shortly after that.

Once complete, the $45M facility will house high-tech manufacturing equipment that the company uses to make Bal Seal® Spring-energized Seals, Bal Seal Canted Coil Springs® and connector systems. Stillman estimates that the construction will result in the creation of about 200 jobs.

Both Friesen and Stillman say they’re “very proud” of the Bal Seal facility, and add that they’ll be aiming for more awards in the future. In 2014 they plan to submit an AIA entry for the completed project, and they hope to explore technical achievement, construction innovation and excellence, community design and trade association accolades as well.

Congressman Lamborn, Mayor Bach Help Kick Off New Bal Seal Construction

Colorado Springs, Colo. – U.S.A. – June 20, 2012 – U.S. Congressman Doug Lamborn (R-CO) and Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach topped the speakers list at a groundbreaking ceremony held June 14 on the future site of Bal Seal Engineering’s new manufacturing facility. The event, organized by Bal Seal to kick off construction at 1350 Bellprat View in Colorado Springs, also featured speeches from El Paso County Commissioner Amy Lathen, Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Council President and CEO Joe Raso and other local business leaders.

Before a 120-plus crowd at the ceremony, Congressman Lamborn, who also serves as a member of the Armed Services Committee, applauded Bal Seal’s decision to build in the area. He acknowledged the company’s role in providing critical sealing, connecting, conducting and EMI shielding components for defense equipment, and cited a direct connection between continued defense program funding and job creation.

First-term Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach also welcomed Bal Seal, and spoke about his efforts to create a more “business friendly” environment in the city. He stressed the importance of reducing the influence of government and eliminating the “red tape” that might inhibit business activity and prevent more companies from moving to the Springs.

The manufacturer of Bal Seal Canted Coil Springs® and Bal Seal® Spring-energized Seals already leases a smaller building in the city, where it employs 48 people. But a projected doubling of sales and significant increase in demand for its products drove its decision to expand.

Plans originally called for construction totaling 66,000 square feet, but Bal Seal President and CEO Rick Dawson told attendees at the groundbreaking that the number has climbed to 155,220.  Dawson added that the expansion represents an investment of $45M, and that it is expected to result in a total of about 200 jobs.

“We’re investing in our future,” Dawson explained. “This project is about anticipating what we’ll need in the next five years, and putting those resources in place.”

Against a backdrop of earth moving equipment on the 18-acre site, Lamborn, Bach and other local officials donned hard hats at the event, and dug into the soil to signal the official start of construction. According to Bal Seal, the new building is slated for completion in 2013.

Component Maker Bucks Trends, Announces Colorado Springs Facility Expansion

Colorado Springs, Colo. –U.S.A. –  November 22, 2011 – Bucking current economic trends, Bal Seal Engineering, Inc. today announced plans to build a new $45 million, 137,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Colorado Springs. 

With the expansion, the privately held U.S.-based provider of custom-engineered, high-performance electrical contacts and seals said it will add an estimated 210 jobs to the local economy, doubling its global workforce as well as its manufacturing capabilities.
