Seal engineering for analytical equipment

In high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) equipment, our custom-engineered spring-energized seals help improve equipment throughput and efficiency. They provide superior performance in a wide range of temperatures, pressures and media types, and exhibit strong resistance to abrasion in mobile phases. Our Bal Spring® canted coil spring grounds and efficiently transfers electrical current in mass spectrometers and other diagnostic instruments.UHPLC equipment image

SFC equipment

Since 1981, Bal Seal® spring-energized seals have been helping some of the biggest names in HPLC/UHPLC push the pressure envelope and gain a competitive edge. Today, we’re applying that same expertise to the advancement of supercritical fluid chromatography.

Our reciprocating flange seals, which combine proven Bal Spring® canted coil spring energizer technology with advanced polymer formulations, are proven performers in SFC. In pressures of 6,000+ psi and temperatures lower than 5 °C, they seal consistently for more cycles, making better sample resolution and faster throughput a reality.

Unlike elastomeric gaskets and O-rings that may dissolve in CO2 media, the reciprocating seal is engineered to operate effectively at both the low and the high pressures inherent in SFC as the media changes from liquid to gas to supercritical fluid.

HPLC/UHPLC equipment

In HPLC and UHPLC systems, a leaking seal can lead to catastrophic failure, contamination and system breakdown.

Our seals for HPLC and UHPLC equipment are custom-engineered and precision manufactured to fit around the pump piston and prevent seepage of eluent. They offer effective sealing in a wide range of temperatures, pressures and media types, strong resistance to abrasion and increased service life in mobile phases, especially when buffer salts are present.UHPLC equipment image

For today's most demanding pump applications, we offer the Enduris™ high-pressure sealing system. Enduris is the first seal proven to deliver consistent, long-term performance in liquid chromatography pumps at pressures of 22,000 psi and higher.

Automated laboratory equipment

UHPLC equipment imageGenomic and proteomic research requires automated laboratory equipment to handle a potentially large volume of assay targets. Handheld pipettes are used in laboratories for drawing and dispensing precise amounts of solvents, reagents, and water based-solutions. They measure volumes from 1 to 1,000 µL, depending on the calibration. Bal Seal® spring-energized seals are used in pipettes to provide chemical inertness and very low friction, while maintaining a generally constant force. Our designs are driven by requirements for high productivity and minimal probability of system or human error. Seals made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyethylene are available in FDA-compatible materials.

Spring engineering for mass spectrometry equipment

Mass spectrometry is the workhorse of analytical chemistry. It performs the analysis of the sample, making mass spec equipment an essential part of the analytical instrumentation market.UHPLC equipment image

Small solutions with maximum contact ensure excellent current-carrying capabilities and continued ionization after the electrospray offers additional benefits. The Bal Seal solution is a gold-plated spring that prevents electromagnetic interference, allows the sample to remain ionized, and guarantees that the mass spec will detect the ions by accelerating them and subjecting them to an electric or magnetic field. The holding spring ensures that the ions remain charged and environmental factors do not affect the sample or cause a contamination.UHPLC equipment image
